Outline For Scripture Union Daily Guide 2 October 2023
Take note of God’s character in 4:2-6. While the people of Judah were taken into captivity, He preserved a remnant through whom He will bring about a new generation, thereby demonstrating His love, grace and mercy.
The “Branch” (4:2), which literally means “New shoot”, is used in this context to refer to a fresh generation that God will raise in Judah. (But the title is used in other places to refer to the Messiah – Isaiah 11:1, Jeremiah 23:5, Zechariah 3:8). Notice how God describes this new generation in 4:3 and how He will achieve this (4:4-6).
We are saved, made holy and are being preserved in the faith, not by our efforts, but by Christ’s gracious act of redemption and His mighty power (Ephesians 2:8-10). It is expected that in response, we will live obedient and productive lives that bring glory to God everyday (Matthew 5:16).
Read 5:1-4 again. What do you think of God’s question in v.4? Our God suffers pain and disappointment when we (His people) frustrate His investment in our lives, His care and love for us. Christ expects us to bear good fruits (godly characters and spirit-controlled lifestyles that draw others to Him, cf. John 15:1-2).
